Théâtre des Champs-Elysées
Symphonies n°8 et n°9
Saturday, 29 February 2020
Théâtre des Champs-ElyséesSymphony No. 8 in F Major It is pure Beethoven in his most individual and characteristic vein, full of those surprises and unexpected effects, those mixtures of tragedy and comedy, not to say farce, which make his music so true a mirror of human life.
Symphony No. 9 N° 9 Holst’s distinctive musical style begins to emerge in this luxuriant early work, with a list of influences that ranges from Wagner to Walt Whitman, and even encompasses Hindu philosophies. It ends with a serenely celestial expression of “Joy! Joy! All over joy!”, echoing Beethoven’s epic Choral Symphony, the powerful and uplifting climax of which is known the world over.
